About the event

EventTheme:Solutions in Midst of Crisis

We had participants from Rusinga Schools, other International and Kenyan Curriculum Schools. The students participated and came up with solutions to today’s global problems.

• The purpose of the hackathon was for students to work on a collaborative project.The teams created prototypes and innovated around a theme. Students were mentored by Andela, Teencode engineers and Rusinga Schools Alumni.

• Andela is an engineering-as-a-service business that helps companies build remote teams quickly and cost-effectively. The company works with schools throughout Africa to mentor students and encourage them to develop their IT skills. The company will partner with us from a mentorship perspective which fits in with their CSR initiative called Teen Code.

• The event theme was Solutions inMidst of Crisis.Teams worked on solutions for a wide grouping of global challenges.

About the chief guests and judges

 

Chief guests

Muchemi Wambugu

Is the founder of Sirius Consult which focuses on technology-led organizational transformations. Until 2016, Muchemi was a Partner at PricewaterhouseCoopers (PwC) Kenya in the Technology Consulting practice as well as Advisory Leader for County Initiatives. He previously worked for Deloitte Consulting East Africa, and IBM Global Services in the USA. Muchemi has a strong background in Management Consulting focused on technology- led transformation initiatives.

Anthony Mungai Hutia

A father of 4 children 2 Boys & 2 Girls. Has been in IT and communication industry for the last 27 years. Worked with various companies namely Kencell, Popote wireless, LG, Samsung and currently with Microsoft as the Head of Education Solutions in the Middle East Africa- Emerging markets. Experience in Private and Public Sector with a focus in Education for the last 9 years.

Rosemary Macharia

Is a certified information systems Auditor with over 13 years experience in Information systems management . She has vast experience in ICT Risk assurance and governance and helps organizations in development of policy frameworks. She is also Certified in change management. She desires to help organizations achieve their strategic and operational objectives as they scale their businesses to greater heights.

Elias Mutua

Is currently a Mathematics and ICT teacher at Rusinga Schools- Nairobi. He holds a First class honours degree from Kenyatta University. He is a DAAD scholar pursuing a Masters of Research and Public Policy at Egerton University. He has recently participated in a Summer School course on Enhancing Academic qualifications in Teaching and Research at Heidelberg University, Germany.

Is a Software Developer from Andela Kenya. He is experienced with Python and Javascript and is currently working with Andela’s Partner- Alation. I’m Chantelle, a 19 year old girl who has just graduated from high school (I was also the Valedictorian) so I will be a freshman in university at NYU in September studying biomolecular and chemical engineering with a minor in robotics.

Debbie Adejumo

I was valedictorian of the 2015 graduating class at Rusinga and received a full scholarship to study Computer Science at the African Leadership University in Mauritius. I graduated with a first class honours in February 2020 and I am now working as a Product Designer at Cellulant. In my free time I am co-founder and run Warble, a design studio that helps small businesses and entrepreneurs with their digital presence. I love sharing my story to inspire others to also live out their dreams.

I am a final year student at Strathmore University studying computer science. I graduated from A-Levels in Rusinga in 2016. When I am not busy at school, I love watching football and formula 1.

I am a Software Engineer at Zydii.BSc Informatics and Computer Science. I graduated from Rusinga in 2015.I’m a big fan of football and actively participate in fantasy football (a big enthusiast).

2nd runners up: An application that is able to track wasted food from supermarkets and restaurants and provide it to those in need.

App name: Chakula cha Malaika

Runners up: Focused on food security and assure the availability of food. Website gives access to fresh and healthy food from farmers and delivery of the same. A marketplace to purchase directly from the farmers.

Webpage name: Pick and Pluck

Winning Team: The team focused on Covid Action. The web app that the team created provides information on Covid-19, answers questions and provides useful guidelines on the pandemic. The site also has fun games for children to keep them entertained during the lockdown.
